This was found in the Middlesex Fells, in E. Massachusetts:

I was with a friend of mine who spotted it when it flew. Since she is an actual entomologist, she insisted I post a picture of it. :)

04:02 pm - Little Mantis

Here's a little mantis I found on one of my abutilons:

I have too many in my yard this year, though! My love for mantids is grappling with my love for butterflies, and the mantids seem to be winning. I have very few butterflies so far this season, but I see a mantid nearly every 3' in the garden. I am thinking about moving some of the mantids to the schoolyard next door. Think they will just come right back?

This is my introduction:

Female Tendodera aridifolia. Laid an egg case a day after capture.

She's a skilled predator.

Close up of feeding.

Enjoy :)

My praying mantis, Tyme, is drinking pink lemonade from KFC/Taco Bell.

She seems to be enjoying it quite a bit... because when I took it away she begged for more.

Go figure...

11:42 pm - Mantids in My Yard

Hi! I thought I'd post a couple mantid photos I took around August 15th in my front yard. The egg case is from early in the year (in fact, it hatched in February, but I think the mantids made it amazingly enough. They were cold enough to just hang from the egg case until spring, and once they warmed up they dispersed). Perhaps this large mantis is one of the offspring from that case.
